Our Story
The Restaurant
The name Poogan’s is as steeped in the history of the downtown Charleston, South Carolina, restaurant scene as it is synonymous with homemade scratch cooking and Southern hospitality. Poogan’s Porch, established in 1976, is Charleston’s oldest independent culinary establishment and remains one of the most popular destinations for diners in the city.
Poogan’s Southern Kitchen was born out of the ever-burgeoning desire and demand to offer that rich history and commitment to quality outside of the Charleston peninsula. Knowing full well Poogan’s Porch could never truly be duplicated away from the walls of the famous 19th century home on Queen Street, it was the careful decision of the family to take its recipes, traditions, techniques, and hospitality to create a stylish Southern diner in its image.
From our house-made baked goods showcased in our exhibition bakeshop to our famous buttermilk fried chicken, fluffy biscuits, and fresh seafood, Poogan’s Southern Kitchen bring our signature comfortable and approachable dining experience to a modern setting.
Spacious banquettes, booths, and tables line the mosaic-tiled floors. Our gorgeous bar, centered perfectly in the space, produces fresh juice used to make our Southern lemonade, orange juice, and hand-crafted adult beverages. The picturesque mezzanine floor offers dining with a view that overlooks it all. If fresh air is what you seek, you can find a seat on our breezy outdoor patio.
With more than 40 years of experience serving Southern food to our guests, we are proud to offer you breakfast, lunch, and dinner with Poogan’s memorable quality stamped on every dish that leaves our kitchen. With our expanded venture, we will continue to grow the name made famous by a fluffy little dog who enjoyed afternoon naps on a front porch that now bears his name.
